Poetry Slam held on April 21st, 2022

The First Annual Joanne Allen and Adam Gayhart Poetry Slam is a success for the AAA at the event and after. The event, last held in 2019 was renamed this year in honor of the founder, adding Joanne Allen’s name to the event’s title. There were just three poets contesting for the prizes sponsored by the AAA, but they came from as far away as Bradford, Pa. and Belfast for the chance to recite their works. “We know that events are opening up slowly, and we didn’t expect a large turn out,” said the organizer. The Slam offered four levels of prizes – first for $50, second for $25, third $15, and honorable mention.

The top winner of the event held April 21st at the David A. Howe Public Library in Wellsville was Daniel Fox of Belfast. Christopher Clow of Wellsville won second place. The third place winner was 80-year-old Donald Neal of Bradford, Pa. who was pleased that the AAA brought the Slam back. He was so pleased that he returned his $15 in prize money to the AAA which then awarded him a complimentary membership.
